The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. Therefore, if the light in thee is darkness, how great is that darkness! — Matthew 6:22-23 (KJV)
Contrary to popular belief, you cannot serve two masters. Sooner or later, a choice must be made.
If you desire to walk with the Lord, your heart and mind must be focused, undivided and pure. To follow God is to walk in light, because, God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all ; (1 John 1:5).
If He is your Master, then your vision — your eye — must be single: wholly devoted to Him,
unclouded by worldly distractions or double-mindedness.
When Jesus speaks of the eye being single in Matthew 6:22, the Greek word haplous conveys a sense of purity, simplicity, sincerity — a wholehearted focus. A person with such a focus will be filled with the light of God, and that light will shine out into the world, illuminating even the darkest corners.
But if our eye is distracted, divided, or impure, then darkness enters our vision and our entire being. And how deep, how consuming, that darkness will become.
Footnote:
A person who is torn between serving God and the world is not walking in light, but in darkness. Such a life cannot shine or guide others, because it is lost in shadow. Make the powerful choice to fix your gaze on Christ today, and let His light fill your whole being.
